Overtime rules in NFL Playoffs

For the 2019 season, rules commanding the playoffs as well as regular-season remain unchanged. Here’s a reminder:

  • At the end of regulation, the visiting team captain will call the toss that will determine which team gets the ball first in overtime.
  • There will be a three-minute intermission where no more than one 10-minute period will be followed. Each team has the opportunity to possess the ball. The only exception is, the team who gets the first ball, scores a touchdown on the opening possession, the game is over.
  • When the game ended as a tie if neither team scores in overtime, the game continues until a winner is determined as so-called sudden death play.
  • Two timeouts are available for both teams.
  • If the game ends on a touchdown, the extra points are not attempted.
  • All the reviews will be initiated only by the replay official.
